Hotner homers, SFU blasts 13 hits for 11-5 win over Wildcats

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Chelsea Hotner homered and Simon Fraser exploded for 13 hits to beat Central Washington 11-5 in the night cap of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Gary and Bobbi Frederick Field, snapping a seven game losing streak Sunday afternoon.
 
SFU dropped the first game 8-0.
 
Simon Fraser entered the week leading the GNAC and was ninth in NCAA Division II with a .358 batting average and a 6.96 earned run average. The team is 23rd in Division II in scoring with 6.95 runs per game.
 
Hotner sent a blast over the right field fence for her team-leading third homerun of the season that scored three runs in the third inning to set the stage for the SFU attack in Game 2. Central Washington scored three in its half of the third to tie the score but SFU kept the hits coming.
 
SFU scored five more runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth for the win.
 
After opening conference play with a four-game sweep of Western Oregon, Simon Fraser lost its next seven before winning the final game of the four-game series against CWU to improve its overall record to 10-13 (5-7 in conference play). SFU sits fifth in the conference.
 
The Wildcats are 12-15 overall and 6-6 in GNAC play.
 
SFU's 13 hits in Game 2 were spread among nine players with Hannah Boulanger, who carries a .333 batting average, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Janique Balcaen and Hotner each had two hits.

GAME TWO | SFU 11 CWU 5
 
Makayla Benz and Anissa Zacharczuk combined to toss a six-hitter with just two walks. Zacharczuk picked up the win pitching the last 4 and 2/3 inning to improve to  7-7.
 
In the fourth, SFU's first four runners got on base, and after Caitlin Zagaris grounded out to third, Rebecca Kirkpatrick had an RBI doubled and SFU had scored four runs. One batter later Hotner doubled to score the fifth run. Hotner had four RBIs in the contest.
 
The decisive inning was the fifth. With two out, Boulanger and Zagaris reached base on singles and then Kirkpatrick's fly ball was dropped by the centre fielder, enabling both runners to score. Balcaen doubled Kirkpatrick home for a four-run inning.
 
GAME ONE| SFU 0, CWU 8
Central Washington pitcher Rhaney Harris tossed a one-hitter, striking out two SFU batters in five inning to pick up her fifth win of the season. The Wildcats managed 13 hits against Julia Hansen (1-3) and Zacharczuk.
 
CWU scored five runs in the second inning and added two in the third and one in the fourth for the win.
