LOS ANGELES – Freshman
Kaylese Callender opened the scoring and junior
Kiara Buono finished it but in between Cal State Los Angeles scored twice and the Red Leafs and Golden Eagles settled for a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.
SFU chased the game-winner much of the second half, forcing Cal State LA goalkeeper Areli Reyes into three saves but couldn't find the elusive third goal on the road.
Callender scored her first career NCAA goal in the second minute when she went high into the air to convert a cross from
Jenieva Musico, sending the ball far post past Reyes for an early lead.
The Golden Eagles answered right back with two quick goals in the eighth and ninth minutes. Both goals came off action in the penalty box with Erin Schrock going low far post past SFU 'keeper
Nicole Anderson and Melody Landphear scoring from a play in tight.
Anderson was making her first start of the season and she faced eight shots during the contest.
Buono tied the score in the 34
th minute when she stole the ball from a pair of Golden Eagles defenders carried it into the box and shot far post for her first of the year.
SFU outshot the Golden Eagles 10-8 and Cal State 'keeper Reyes made six saves.
After picking up two draws in California, SFU is now 1-1-2 in non-conference games. The Red Leafs open its GNAC conference schedule with four straight road games beginning Set. 15 against Western Washington, currently ranked No. 10 in the United Coaches West Region rankings.
