CARSON, Calif. – SFU was 12 minutes away from full time and a road win over Cal State Dominguez Hills when the home squad manage to put one past Red Leafs goalkeeper
Sarah Loewen to salvage a 1-1 draw on a hot and humid Thursday evening on Dignity Health Sports Park Field.
The Red Leafs had drawn first blood in the 14th minute when a defensive lapse by Cal State paved the way for the game's first score. After a throw-in in the Toro half of the field, SFU's
Isabella Muzzolini slipped her pass through five Toro defenders to
Kate Cartier, who gathered the ball in front of a Toro defender on the right side and took a pair of touches before sending her shot to the left and past CSUDH keeper Alyssa Newsom.
That's where the score remained for the next 65 minutes when Cal State midfielder Kaia Mills made her first career goal a memorable one, erasing a one-goal deficit deep in the second half, and earning the draw.
Taking a feed down the right side, Mills took two steps towards the SFU goal where seven defenders stood between her and the goal. Stopping on a dime and reversing skate to collect her footing, Mills lofted her shot over the SFU defense and into the upper left corner of the net.
SFU outshot the Toros 9-8 and held Cal State to a single shot on goal.
SFU, now 1-1-1 in non-conference games, will travel to Cal State LA on Saturday for a 11 AM first kick. SFU opens its GNAC conference schedule with four straight road games. It's first game at SFU Stadium Sept. 29. Women's soccer season eight-game season passes are on sale now for $68 and can be purchased
