BILLINGS, Mont. – Simon Fraser University forward
Gemma Cutler hit a buzzer beat at the end of regulation to tie the score but the Red Leafs lost 69-67 in overtime to Montana State University Billings in women's basketball action Thursday evening.
The result left the Red Leafs 6-6 overall, 4-4 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play while the Yellowjackets improved to 15-4, 6-2 in GNAC play.
The Yellowjackets led by ten with just over two minutes left in the game, but Simon Fraser hit a trio of big shots, including three pointers by
Grace Killins and
Jessica Wisotzki, and then
Gemma Cutler scored a layup with one second on the clock to tie the score at 61 each. SFU went for the win at the end of regulation but Killins missed on the three. Cutler grabbed the offensive board and scored the put-back to send the game to overtime.
The extra period went down to the wire. The 'Jackets were able to knock down enough free throws late, and never let Simon Fraser get a shot off at the end of overtime. The two teams traded baskets early in the overtime period, and then went cold, neither team making a field goal in the final three minutes of play. It would end up coming down to free throws, with Simon Fraser fouling three times in the final 25 seconds of overtime. Despite knocking down just two of them, it would prove to be enough.
SFU was led by
Sophia Wisotzki with 20-points,
Jessica Wisotzki with 18-points, and forward
Gemma Cutler with 14-points and nine boards.
The Red Leafs were 25-of-60 from the field and connected on 10-of-30 threes. The Yellowjackets won the battles on the boards 45 to 33, and MSUB collected 14 points from the line (14-of-21).
