SFU flexes defensive muscle to take down nationally ranked Central Washington

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Four players scored in double figures and SFU dug in defensively to win its second straight road game 65-57 over nationally ranked Central Washington Saturday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball action at Nicholson Pavillion.
 
Four SFU starters scored in doubles figures. NCAA second-leading scorer Jessica Wisotzki, sister Sophia Wisotzki, forward Gemma Cutler and forward Emma Kramer combined to score 53 of SFU's 65 points.
 
The Red Leafs held No. 24 ranked Central Washington 20 points below their season scoring average. SFU's defense held the Wildcats to 31 percent shooting and 18.5 percent on threes.
 
 
The Red Leafs held the Wildcats to eight points in the second quarter and just 13 points in the third quarter. In the final period, SFU held the Wildcats to one field goal in the final 2:22 but that three-pointer managed to pull CWU to within four points, 61-57, with 68 seconds remaining. It took four straight free throws by Sophia Wisotzki to ice the game.
 
SFU has now won three of its last four games to move to 3-2 in the GNAC, 5-4 overall. CWU is 3-3 in GNAC play and 11-4 overall.
 
SFU led 33-26 at the half and took a seven-point lead into the final period.
 
Jessica Wisotzki finished with a season-low 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting; Gemma Cutler had 14-points and eight rebounds; Sophia Wisotzki scored 12 points and grabbed seven boards. Emma Kramer had 11-points and five rebounds.
 
The Red Leafs were 25-of-62 (40.3%) on field goals and connected on 8-of-21 (38.1%) threes.
 
CWU's Samantha Bowman led all players with 23 points and 19 rebounds.
 
The Red Leafs play back at home on Thursday, Jan. 12 (Western Oregon) and Saturday Jan. 14 (Saint Martin's). Red Leaf bracelets will be given out at Thursday's game and Red Leaf branded bucket hats at Saturday's contest. Parking is free at SFU varsity games. All basketball games also feature performances by the SFU Dance Team, a $500 half-court shot and t-shirt toss.
