Denby Carswell leads SFU men’s golf; Justin Bjornson records hole-in-one as Red Leafs tie for eighth at Otter Invitational

BURNABY, B.C. – For the third tournament in a row, Denby Carswell of Burnaby, B.C., led his hometown SFU Red Leafs as the highest-placing finisher on the men's golf team.
 
Carswell, a redshirt freshman, tied for ninth place at the Otter Invitational, hosted by California State Monterey Bay at the par-72, 6,860-yard Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside. He finished the two-day tournament at 1-under-par 215. Carswell carded rounds of 2-over 75 and 2-under 70 on Monday, before ending with another 70 Tuesday. He recorded a dozen birdies in 54 holes.
 
SFU, ranked 14th in the national coaches' poll coming into the event, tied for eighth place at 32-over 896 (304-293-299), 35 shots behind the tournament-winning host school.
 
Senior Michael Crisologo (Richmond, B.C.) tied for 19th at 3-over 219 (77-69-73). He had 11 birdies over the course of the event, and one eagle, which came on the second hole he played – the par-5 No. 10 – in Monday's second round.
 
Junior Bailey Bjornson (Surrey, B.C.) tied for 42nd with a score of 12-over 228 (74-76-78), which included seven birdies.
 
Justin Bjornson (Surrey, B.C.) and Kyle Mayner (Kelowna, B.C.) were part of a four-player group in 63rd place (21-over 237). Justin Bjornson had a second round 81 bookended by 78s. The freshman recorded his first hole-in-one in NCAA competition by acing the par-3 fourth, which was his 14th hole of his round. Mayner posted rounds of 79, 78 and 80, with eight birdies.
 
The Red Leafs have now completed the fall portion of their 2023-24 NCAA men's golf season, and will return to competition in the new year.
