SFU can't overcome nationally ranked hosts

BURNABY, B.C. – The SFU Red Leafs lost 3-0 (25-9, 34-32, 25-19) at 21st-ranked Seattle Pacific Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

Junior opposite Brooke Dexter (Anchorage, Alaska) led SFU (9-6, 4-3 GNAC) with nine kills, while junior outside hitter Jocelyn Sherman (Victoria, B.C.) added a half-dozen kills. Sophomore setter Eva Person (Brentwood Bay, B.C.) recorded 19 assists, freshman libero Macyn Unger (Prince George, B.C.) led the Red Leafs with 16 digs and senior middle Kalyn Hartmann (Langley, B.C.) had a solo block and three block assists.

The hosts opened the match by taking the first dozen points, and were nearly flawless in the first set with one attack error.

SFU rebounded in a markedly different second set by taking an 8-3 lead. Senior outside hitter Hanna Kolof (Vancouver) capped off the run with a kill that forced the Falcons (13-3, 7-1) into a timeout. SPU moved into the lead at 12-11. Neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way.

Junior opposite Sophie Lachapelle (Kelowna, B.C.) knocked down a kill to put the Red Leafs in front 21-19, but the Falcons earned a set point at 24-23. SFU saved the set point and then had one of its own at 25-24, but the home team recorded a kill to tie the score. The Red Leafs led 26-25, 27-26, 28-27, and 29-28 but couldn't end the set. Neither could SPU when it was ahead 30-29 and 31-30. Dexter gave her team a 32-31 edge with a kill. But the Falcons answered back with a combination block as well as the next two points to finally clinch the marathon set, which featured 21 ties and nine lead changes.
