Sophie Klassen earns academic recognition from College Sports Communicators

BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser Red Leafs forward Sophie Klassen has earned a spot on the College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District® NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Team.

Klassen, who is from Chilliwack, B.C., is a Kinesiology major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.82 on a 4.33 scale. Last week, she made the 2022-23 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women's Basketball All-Academic Team, presented by Barnes and Noble College, for the fourth consecutive time. 
 
Entering the final week of the 2022-23 NCAA women's basketball regular season, Klassen is ranked 11th in the GNAC with an average of 0.8 blocked shots per game. She is tied for 29th in the league with teammate and fellow senior Emma Kramer (Surrey, B.C.) with 4.0 rebounds per contest.
 
Klassen, Kramer and Georgia Swant (North Vancouver, B.C.) will play the last regular season game of their university careers on Thursday as the Red Leafs (10-11, 8-9 GNAC) face Western Washington. The Vikings are ranked 12th in the D2SIDA and 13th in the WCBA Div. II polls. The tipoff in Bellingham is scheduled for 7 p.m. 

SFU is part of a four-way battle for the final three berths to the GNAC championship tournament. With 8-8 conference records, Alaska Anchorage and Seattle Pacific are currently tied for fourth. The Red Leafs are sixth, while Northwest Nazarene of Idaho (7-9) is seventh.
 
The 2022-23 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Basketball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in mid March.
