BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser softball team lost 7-2 and 5-2 to Chaminade (Hawaii) in an NCAA non-conference doubleheader Tuesday in Honolulu.
Junior
Megan Duclos (Saint-Eustache, Que.) and freshman
Breanne Beardsall (Barrie, Ont.) had three hits each on the day. Duclos also had three stolen bases, all of which came in the opener. She is tied for the most stolen bases in NCAA Division II with 20 on the season.
The Red Leafs fell to 5-8 while the Silverswords improved to 4-2. The start of Tuesday's games was delayed by an hour because of rain.
Chaminade (Hawaii) 7, Simon Fraser 2
SFU was forced to play from behind after the home side scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Duclos opened the top of the fourth with a single to left field, and then stole second and third base. She came home on an RBI-groundout by reigning Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week
Abby McGlynn, a sophomore from Langley, B.C.
SFU got within two runs – 4-2 – in the fourth inning when Beardsall knocked a single up the middle to plate freshman
Anika Janzen (Chilliwack, B.C.). However, Chaminade answered back with a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth, before adding an insurance run in the sixth.
Duclos went 2-for-4 batting, and stole three bases, and sophomore
Kristen Davyduke (Saskatoon) drew a couple of walks. Freshman pitcher
Reese Davies (Surrey, B.C.) gave up just one run in three innings of relief.
Bailey Jacobsen had two hits in three at-bats for the Silverswords.
Chaminade (Hawaii) 5, Simon Fraser 2
The hosts did all of their scoring in the third inning. Taryn Fujioka made it 2-0 with a two-run double to left center field, and scored on the next play thanks to an error. Jacobsen put her team in front 4-0 with an RBI-single, and an error on the same sequence allowed the fifth run to reach home.

Freshman
Cassidy Affeldt (Mission, B.C.) started SFU's rally by doubling to left field to begin the fifth. She later scored on a wild pitch. Then freshman
Amy Hughes (Brampton, Ont.) knocked a single through the right side to drive in rookie
Laura Winters (Brooklin, Ont.). That forced a Chaminade pitching change. The next batter, Beardsall, got on base with a bunt single, giving the Red Leafs runners on first and second with one out. However, they couldn't bring home another run.
SFU loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth and got a pair of runners into scoring position with one out in the seventh but were kept off the scoreboard.
Sophomore pitcher
Shaneika Hollingworth of Maple Ridge, B.C., gave up just one unearned run in 3.2 innings of relief for the Red Leafs. Affeldt was 2-for-2 batting, drew a walk and scored a run.
SFU will play a non-conference doubleheader Thursday at Hawaii Pacific. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Pacific.
