Red Leafs score five runs in extra inning for first win of 2023

LOS LUNAS, NM – The SFU Red Leafs scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win their first game of the 2023 season, 10-9, over Adams State, and deliver Stacy Fournier her first collegiate softball victory as interim head coach at the South Central Regional Challenge in Los Lunas, New Mexico.

SFU was leading 5-1 entering the seventh inning but Adams State scored four runs in the seventh to tie the game and then added four more runs in the top of the eighth for what appeared to be an epic comeback victory.

But trailing 9-5 in the eighth, SFU scored on an error and then won the game with four consecutive singles, a walk, and an RBI single by freshman Cassidy Affeldt for the game-winning run.

Three Red Leafs had three-hit games to help the team to a 14-hit performance. Abby McGlynn had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored in five at-bats while Caitlin Zagari went 3-for-5 with one RBI and Cassidy Affeldt was 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.

SFU gave up 12 hits in the game using three pitchers. Nevada Johnson pitched one inning for the win and is 1-2 on the year.

SFU lost the second game of the double-header 7-5 to New Mexico Highlands. The Red Leafs were leading 5-2 after four innings but New Mexico exploded for five runs in the fifth to steal the win.

SFU scored home runs off the bat of Affeldt and Kristen Davyduke.

Megan Duclos had three hits while Zagari and Davyduke had two hits apiece in an 11-hit performance by the Red Leafs.
