BURNABY, B.C. – One of NCAA Division II's most prolific scorers and one of its best shot blockers, both stars with the Simon Fraser Red Leafs women's basketball team, have been recognized with Great Northwest Athletic Conference honours.
Junior guard / forward
Jessica Wisotzki from Langley, B.C., was a unanimous selection to the 2023 All-GNAC First Team while sophomore forward
Gemma Cutler (North Vancouver, B.C.) earned honourable mention All-GNAC.
The 6-foot-2 Wisotzki pushed her all-around game to a new level this season, and is averaging 21.4 points per appearance. That has her ranked second in the GNAC, and ninth in all of Div. II. Wisotzki has an average of 2.55 three-point field goals per game, the most of any player in the league, and 36th-best in Div. II.
She is second on the Red Leafs roster in rebounding (4.5 rebounds per game, 24th in the GNAC), field goal percentage (43.8 per cent, 16th in GNAC), free throw percentage (80.9 per cent, 10th in the GNAC) and three-point percentage (40.0 per cent, sixth in the GNAC, 33rd in Div. II).
"The Wiz" had a career-high 34 points against Concordia (California) on Nov. 26, 2022, and 33 points on Feb. 11 at Western Oregon, a performance that included 17 successful foul shots in 18 attempts.
Wisotzki made the All-GNAC Second Team last season.
In just her second season of university basketball, the 6-2 Cutler has already become a huge presence on the floor for SFU. Her 2.7 blocks per game is currently the second-best figure in Div. II, which has just over 300 teams.
Cutler recorded a career-best seven blocks on Feb. 4, 2023 against Northwest Nazarene (Idaho), which also tied for the most in game by a Red Leafs player in the program's NCAA era. She also had back-to-back six-block performances against the Alaska schools at the end of December.
Cutler's 10.5 points per game average is second on SFU, and 18th in the league. She's the team leader in rebounding with 8.7 per contest (third in the GNAC, 58th in Div. II) and field goal percentage (54.5 per cent, fourth in the GNAC).
Wisotzki, Cutler and the rest of the sixth-seeded Red Leafs (10-12, 8-10 GNAC) will open the
GNAC Women's Basketball Championships Thursday against the No. 3 seed Central Washington. The tipoff at Carver Gym in Bellingham, Washington, is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at
