SFU drops a pair to Saints, set to begin GNAC play Saturday

LACEY, Wash.  – Simon Fraser lost a pair of non-conference games 5-4 and 9-6 to Saint Martin's Saint on Sunday in Lacey, Wash. and now the Red Leafs get set to open its Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule next weekend on the road.
 
The Red Leafs will face the Western Washington Vikings when they open GNAC play this Saturday at Viking Field to begin a four-game set. The Vikings are 8-6 on the season and picked to finish third in the GNAC Coaches' Preseason Poll. The Red Leafs have fallen to 5-13 overall, having played all 18 games on the road.
 
SFU recorded five stolen bases in the series vs the Saints and now has 63 on the season, tops in NCAA Division II.

SFU recorded just three hits in the opener but managed to tie the game 2-2 in the second inning when right fielder Anika Janzen doubled on a line drive to right field, sccoring Kristen Davyduke and Avery Barker. Davyduke had walked while Barker reached base on a single to right field.

The Saints rebuilt their lead to 5-2 until the fifth inning when shortstop Amy Hughes walked, stole second and then scored on a Megan Duclos RBI double down the left field line. The next batter up, Abby McGlynn, singled through first base to score Duclos, and the Red Leafs trailed 5-4.
 
That's how the game ended after SMU pitcher Chloe Leverington came on in relief to retired the next six SFU batters, including striking out the final four Red Leafs.
 
SFU pitcher Reese Davies suffered her first loss of the season pitching the first two and 2/3s innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Julia Hansen finished the game, giving up five hits and one run while striking out three.
 
GAME 2 | SFU 6 SMU 9
 
In game two, SFU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but the Saints responded by scoring the next seven runs to take a 7-2 lead after three innings.
 
SFU had a four-run fourth inning to pull within 7-6. The Red Leafs scored four runs on three hits in the fourth, highlighted by a bases loaded two-out double to left field by Janique Balcaen that scored Duclos, McGlynn and Cassidy Affeldt.
 
The Saints scored two more runs in the fifth while the Red Leafs could generate just two hits over the final three innings.
 
Shaneika Hollingworth and Nevada Johnson combined to toss a 10-hitter, striking out two. Johnson started and was tagged with the loss after giving up the first seven runs.
 
Balcaen, Duclos, McGlynn and Janzen all had two hits while Caitlin Zagari had a double to account for all of SFU's nine hits.
