Red Leafs eyeing top 8, advancing to medal play at NCAA Championship

WARREN, Ohio. – Simon Fraser improved by four strokes in team play but remains tied for 11th place after the second round of the 2023 NCAA Division II National Men's Golf Championship being played at the Avalon Lakes Golf Course on Tuesday. The Red Leafs had a team-total of 5-over par 293 and stand at +14 (590) after 36 holes in the 54-hole event.
 
Oklahoma Christian shot 11-under par 277 on Tuesday and holds a commanding 10-stroke lead over second place Barry (Fla.).  The tournament format features three rounds of individual stroke play competition, with the top eight teams advancing to head-to-head medal play with the national champion being crowned from that group.  
 
The Red Leafs are currently tied for 11th place with defending champion Lee University in the field of 20 teams. North Georgia and Harding University (582) are deadlocked for ninth while three teams are in sixth place at 581.  
 
Simon Fraser needs to make up nine strokes to climb into the top eight teams.
 
Bailey Bjornson was the Red Leafs team leader on Tuesday with a 1-over-par 73 and a two-day score of 146. He is tied for 29th overall. Aidan Goodfellow, Ryan Hodgins and Jordan Bean are all tied for 46th after two-round totals of 3-over 146. On Tuesday, Goodfellow shot par-72, Hodgins had a 73 and Bean fired a 75.
 
Michael Crisologo rounded out the Red Leafs scoring with a 75. He heads into the final 18 with a 156 total.
 
Mauricio Figueroa of Texas A&M International is the leader in the individual competition at 136. He posted a 69 on Tuesday to go with his 67 on Monday and has a one-stroke lead over Jordan Lee of Western Washington. Lee had rounds of 70 and 67.
 
SFU will tee off starting at 7:15 a.m. (PT) for Wednesday's third round with live scoring available via Golfstat.com. SFU is paired with Harding University and Lee University.
