BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser student-athletes
Emily Chilton (women's cross country and track and field) and
Ryan Stolys (men's golf) made history Thursday by winning the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Faculty Athletic Representative Scholar-Athlete Award, presented by Barnes & Noble College, for an unprecedented sixth time in their NCAA careers.
Chilton (2022) and Stolys (2023) are the last two winners of SFU's
Bill DeVries Senior All-Around Athlete of the Year Award. Chilton won the Nadine Caron Top Scholar-Athlete Award for four consecutive years (2019-22) and Stolys had the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Excellence in Leadership Award renamed in his honour in 2022.
They led a group of 14 Red Leafs recognized for their academic and athletic achievement that included
Sophie Klassen (women's basketball) and
Jordan Schmidt (men's cross country and track and field), both of whom became five-time honourees as they completed their SFU varsity careers.
The Faculty Athletic Representative Scholar-Athlete Award recognizes all student-athletes listed on any squad at a GNAC institution, regardless of whether the sport is a GNAC championship sport, that have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.85 or greater. Conference affiliate members could nominate only student-athletes from the sport in which they compete in the GNAC.
A faculty athletic representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty at an NCAA member institution who has been designated to serve as a liaison between the institution's faculty and the athletic department. The FAR serves as a representative of the institution in conference and NCAA affairs, and their role is "to ensure that the academic institution establishes and maintains the appropriate balance between academics and athletics." Dr. Peter Ruben is the FAR at SFU.
Three Red Leafs earned the FAR Scholar-Athlete Award for the third time:
Mackenzie Almeida (women's soccer),
Kohl Peters (volleyball) and
Diana Voloshin (track and field).
A half-dozen SFU athletes were repeat winners:
Brooke Dexter (volleyball),
Mitchell Gibbs (track and field),
Owen Gudmundson (men's wrestling), 2023 Nadine Caron Top Scholar-Athlete
Randon Hall (men's swimming),
Jorrin Lenton (track and field), and
Maddy Paugh (women's track and field).
Aneesh Kaura of men's golf won the FAR Scholar-Athlete Award for the first time.
