BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser Red Leafs have named former PGA of Canada Apprentice Professional of the Year winner, Krysta Schaus, as full-time assistant with the women's and men's golf programs, head coach Matt Steinbach announced today.

Schaus brings extensive experience in golf coaching, leadership and an unwavering commitment to delivering a top-tier experience for student-athletes. She simultaneously led two NCAA Division I golf programs and completed a Master of Business Administration (2018) as an assistant golf coach at Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina. Two years later, after returning home to Canada, Schaus won the prestigious Moe Norman Apprentice Professional of the Year Award while working as an assistant professional at Toronto Golf Club in 2020.

"Krysta's background as a player, coach, and golf professional is truly unique and I look forward to the influence she will bring to our program," said Steinbach.  "Krysta has first-hand knowledge of what is required to be a successful NCAA student-athlete and coach, and I'm confident her familiarity with the demands of the role will translate to our entire program; from coaching the current team, to recruiting, to alumni engagement and fundraising."

Schaus was an accomplished student-athlete on the women's golf team at NCAA Division II Erskine College in South Carolina for four years, winning the Jake Todd Award for the senior athlete who best demonstrates outstanding athletic ability, academic achievement, leadership, character, and sportsmanship (2016).

"Golf has always played a significant role in my life, with many cherished memories rooted in my university golf experience, and I'm confident my previous experience as a player and coach will help contribute to the continued success of the Red Leafs golf programs," said Schaus.  "As Canada's only NCAA team, I look forward to connecting with our student-athletes, the golf community out west, alumni, and future Red Leafs."

A native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Schaus spent one year as a pre-med student before switching majors, earning a BSc Sport Management in 2016 from Erskine College the same year she won the 2016 New Brunswick Ladies Provincial Championships by nine shots.

After six years of education in the U.S., Schaus found herself longing for home and returned to Canada. She begins her new role Oct. 1. The Red Leafs women's golf program opens the season September 11 at the Saint Martin's University Fall Invitational at The Home Course in Dupont, Wa.
