DUPONT, Wash. – The Simon Fraser men's golf team claimed their second straight title at the Bishop Invitational in DuPont, Washington, this weekend, with a spectacular 10-under-par second round on Friday afternoon serving as the centerpiece of the Red Leafs' winning performance.
After an even-par opening Round, Simon Fraser managed to stave off fierce competition on Saturday, as their six-over-par showing on Saturday was enough to maintain their lead over the field.
Amidst a loaded 13-team field, featuring sides from all over Washington State and B.C., SFU never finished any individual round below fourth overall, and their second-round showing was the best single round of any team in the competition.
The Red Leafs finished the tourney with a three-round score of 4-under-par 860 at The Home Course. They were the only squad under par for the tournament, which concluded with Canada's NCAA team a half-dozen shots ahead of California State East Bay and nine in front of defending NAIA champion British Columbia.
SFU's impressive performance was done through strong performances up and down the lineup. Brothers
Justin Bjornson (three-under-par 213) and
Bailey Bjornson (two-under-par 214) led SFU individually, finishing eighth and ninth respectively. Senior
Michael Crisologo parlayed his one-over-par 217 into a tie for 11th overall.
SFU's entire rotation finished in the top half of the 69-man field, as
Kyle Mayner (four-over-par 220) and
Ryan Hodgins (six-over-par 222) earned shares of 17th and 29th overall.
SFU will have little time to savour their season-opening triumph. They'll head to Bellingham, Washington, this Monday. The two-day Western Washington Invitational will run September 25-26.
