BURNABY, B.C. – Playing its third game on the road in the last eight days, the Simon Fraser women's soccer team travelled to Monmouth, Oregon, to take on the Western Oregon Wolves. A 61st-minute goal by the Wolves' Lilly Nowatzke was the difference as SFU fell 1-0.
The hosts – which received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Top 25 – had the biggest chance in the first half when they fired a shot off the crossbar just 11 minutes into the game. Red Leafs goalkeeper
Sarah Loewen (North Vancouver, B.C.) made two saves before the halftime break to keep things level. She ended the contest with four stops.
The deadlock was broken, however, early in the second half when a long ball over the top bounced behind the SFU defence. Loewen rushed out to claim it but WOU's Emma Higashi reached out her leg to just poke the ball ahead and Nowatzke ran on to knock it in the open net.
Despite a push for an equalizer, the Red Leafs were unable to break down the Wolves' defence and were shutout. SFU is now 2-2-1 on the season overall, and 1-2 in GNAC play.
