No. 25 ranked Chico State stuns home crowd with two goals in win over Red Leafs

BURNABY – The SFU men's soccer team's home opener was spoiled for 507 fans at SFU Stadium Thursday night when West Region rival and No. 25 ranked Chico State capitalized on its chances to walk-off Terry Fox Field with a 2-0 win over the Red Leafs.

Simon Fraser had just returned from a successful season-opening road trip picking up two wins and receiving votes in the NCAA DII United Coaches Poll. But in front of their home crowd the Red Leafs couldn't find the back of the net.

"We played well for long extended moments, we had control of the game, and we dominated possession doing what we wanted to do but at the end of the day this game is about capitalizing on mistakes and one team finished their chances and one team didn't," said SFU head coach Clint Schneider.

"Chico State deserved to win because they finished their chances," continued Schneider. "They deserved to win because the way they wanted to play the game, they had success. So massive credit to Chico. They are very good at what they do and they have players who have bought into that system."

The Wildcats are currently 3-0 after besting Great Northwest Athletic Conference programs Seattle Pacific, Western Washington and SFU.

The Cougars Kristoffer Brown came off the bench to score both goals, one in each half. In the 39th minute, he gathered in a cross from the far sideline and chipped it into the right corner from the six-yard box. He scored again in the 59th minute in a scramble, picking up a loose ball and firing a looping shot over SFU goal keeper Justyn Sandhu from 12 yards, placing it just inside the post.

The two teams were virtually even statistically. Chico State had a 17 to 16 advantage in shots while SFU had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Each goalie made six saves.

SFU returns to action against Sonoma State on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. on Terry Fox Field.
