Davida Hill and
Sophie Lachapelle had a career-high 19 kills each and
Eva Person delivered 46 assists to propel the SFU Red Leafs to a 3-1 win over host Azusa Pacific in the opening volleyball match of the APU/CPP Invitational at the Felix Events Center.
It was the third straight win for the Red Leafs, 4-1 to start the season, who registered set scores of 25-22, 25-22, 20-25 and 25-22.
Lachapelle has recorded double-digits kills in every game this season and she delivered in a big way in the decisive fourth set Thursday, leading the way with nine kills. Davida delivered six kills in the final game. Early in the fourth, the Cougars were up 7-5, but the Red Leafs rattled off six unanswered points to take the lead for good. A late comeback attempt by the Cougars made it 24-22, but Simon Fraser closed things out with a block from Person and
Kalyn Hartmann at the net for the 25th and final point of the evening.
In the opening stanza, the teams were tied 6-6 when SFU took control, opened up a seven-point margin and never trailed on their way to a 25-22 win. In the second set, SFU trailed 11-8 but closed out the game on a 17-11 run when Hill delivered the game-winning kill.
SFU had an attack advantage in the opening two sets, hitting at a .324 (16 of 34) clip in Set 1 and a .462 (15 of 26) pace in Set 2.
The Cougars regrouped in the third set. Azusa Pacific opened up a 10-6 lead, but Simon Fraser came back with six of the next seven points to grab its first advantage of the set at 12-11. The game was tied briefly at 13-13 before the Cougars went on a 6-0 run to put the game away.
Overall, SFU put down 65 kills to APU's 60, had a 59-to-51 advantage in assists, and a 61-to-50 advantage in digs. SFU had an overall attack percentage of .353 (65 of 136) compared to the Cougars .287 attack percentage. Each team had 10 blocks.
Lachapelle had a double-double with 19 kills and 10 digs while
Jocelyn Sherman had 10 kills and 10 digs.
The Red Leafs continue play on Friday with two more games against Cal State East Bay at 12:30 p.m. and Cal Poly Pomona at 6 p.m.
SFU's first home match is Sept. 21 at the West Gym and it will feature a t-shirt giveaway.
