Wisotzkis star as Leafs fall to Seawolves

BURNABY, B.C. – Playing a bit shorthanded on Saturday night, the SFU Red Leafs (9-7, 1-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) came up short against the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (8-5, 2-2 GNAC), falling 89-68 on the tail end of their Alaskan swing.

SFU got a couple of terrific performances from both Jessica and Sophia Wisotzki of Langley, B.C. The sisters posted similar statlines, with senior guard/forward Jessica going 8 of 16 from the field for 23 points, adding five boards and an assist. She also earned a career-high four blocks. Meanwhile, junior guard Sophia went 7 of 14 from the field for 22 points, tacking on five rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard/forward Myrlaine Shelvey (Langley, B.C.) grabbed a personal-best six rebounds.

As a team, SFU shot 34.9 per cent from the field, and 25 per cent from three-point range. Junior forward Gemma Cutler of North Vancouver, B.C., a key focal point of the Red Leafs this season who recorded 24 points and a career-best 16 rebounds on Thursday, did not play.

Alaska never trailed in the contest, and the two sides were last knotted up at 7-7. Where the Seawolves had an equally poor night from distance, shooting just 26.9 per cent from beyond the arc, they made up for it close to the basket. The Seawolves posted 60 points from inside the paint, compared to 30 for SFU. They out-rebounded the visitors 52-40, and turned those second chances into 22 points.

Alaska had four players hit double digits in scoring. Guard Senya Rabouin led the Seawolves with 21 points, while Tori Hollingshead had 18 in just 21 minutes off the bench.

Senior guard Grace Killins (Coquitlam, B.C.) hit three shots from long distance for the Red Leafs in the opening quarter, which concluded with the team down 23-17. However, the Seawolves stretched their advantage with a 28-13 second quarter, and led by as many as 26 points three minutes into the third. SFU never really found a way to get back into the contest.

The Red Leafs will have a few days to rest up, as they host a pair of games next week at the West Gym. First, the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks come to town on Thursday, January 11, followed by the Central Washington Wildcats on Saturday, January 13. Both games are slated to tip off at 7 p.m.
