Michael Crisologo leads SFU Men’s Golf to Strong Showing in Spring Season Start

2/14/2024 9:38:00 AM

SFU Men's golf kicked off their spring season at the California State University San Marcos Fujikara Invitational on February 12 and 13. The earliest start to the spring season since 2017, the men's team played well finishing with three round team score of 880 at Shadow Ridge Golf Club. The event featured a strong field of predominantly California schools, with 9 currently ranked in the top 10 of the west region. SFU's +16 total placed them 7th and earned important head to head wins over Sonoma State, California State San Bernadino, and Hawaii Pacific University.

On a day where hole locations were cut close to edges on the precariously challenging greens, SFU fired the third lowest final round score with a team total of +2.  "We needed 36 holes to knock off the winter rust. I'm proud of how we showed up and battled through three tough rounds. The golf course is a stern test and you needed to have all parts of your game sharp in order to score well" said Head Coach, Matt Steinbach.  "We are definitely at a disadvantage compared to our southern competition, we haven't seen greens that fast since October and we were challenged to adjust in short time.  Overall this is a great result for the guys and we look to carry this momentum forward"

Senior Michael Crisologo led the Redleafs with a 6th place finish, finishing the tournament at -2 with scores of 75, 69, 70.  This is Crisologo's sixth top 10 finish and currently paces him to a 72.27 scoring average for the season. Michael started the event with a double bogey on the challenging 15th hole, narrowly missing the water protected green and found himself +3 through the first three. He then proceeded to make 12 birdies over the remaining 51 holes leading SFU in red numbers for the event.

Freshman Justin Bjornson finished second for SFU with rounds of 73, 74, 73 to finish T23.  He tied for the team lead in pars with 34 over three rounds, highlighted by his scrappy and determined play around the greens.

Current GNAC scoring leader, Denby Carswell fired rounds of 70, 80, 76 to tie for 43 along with teammate Ryan Hodgins (75, 76, 75).  Logan Boucher rounded out the team with scores of 79, 78, 72.  All three counted towards SFU's team total and showed signs of tournament form.

Next up for the Redleafs is the "Fraser Cup", a head to head match with the University of the Fraser Valley.  Teams will face off in a medal head to head format (same on used for NCAA DII Nationals) on Sunday February 25 and Monday February 26.  Fans and supporters of the team are invited to wear red and come cheer on the Men's Team as they host Day one of the Fraser Cup at Meadow Gardens Golf Club at 12pm on Sunday, February 26.
