The Simon Fraser Red Leafs (15-12, 7-7 GNAC) exacted their revenge over the Saint Martin's Saints (5-14, 3-9 GNAC) with a blowout 85-63 home win less than a month after the Saints beat them in a close one in Washington.
Sophia Wisotzki continued her hot streak with 28 points and eight rebounds, the sixth time in the last seven games that she's scored at least 24 points.
Myrlaine Shelvey recorded 19 points and six rebounds, while
Gemma Cutler put up an incredible nine points, 10 boards and six blocks in just seven minutes due to foul trouble.
Anjel Galbraith led the way for the Saints with 20 points, three rebounds and three assists. Lauryn Morris nearly double-doubled with 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Wisotzki started out hot with six early points, which helped SFU jump out to an early eight-point lead. Saint Martin's didn't let them fully pull away though, fighting back with a 9-5 run to close the first to make it 20-16 for the Red Leafs.
After the Saints tied things at 29 midway through the second, SFU reeled off a 10-2 run capped by a Shelvey layup to reassert control. The Saints hit a buzzer-beater three to end the half down 39-34, but the Red Leafs had a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
The Saints did cut that lead to as a little as one point early in the third, but back-to-back triples from
Grace Killins followed by buckets from Wisotzki and Shelvey pushed their advantage to double digits.
The third ended with a score of 59-51, setting the stage for the final frame where SFU turned on the jets and routed the Saints to the tune of a 26-12 advantage in the fourth.
It was again the dynamic duo of Wisotzki and Shelvey leading the way, with the two of them combining to score all of SFU's first 13 points in the fourth. Buckets from Cutler and
Makenna Gardner added to the lead as the Red Leafs defense had a six-minute stretch where they held the Saints to just a single point.
A pair of free throw from
Rilyn Quirke finished off the night with a score of 85-63, SFU's second-biggest win of the season. After a 2-6 start to GNAC play the Red Leafs now have five wins in six games, and are just two games back of third-place in the conference.
Next up for the Red Leafs are their final two road games of the regular season. First, they head to Washington to take on Seattle Pacific on Thursday, February 22
