Meet Recap: Standout Success in Phoenix, Arizona

Over two days of intense competition in Phoenix, Arizona, the Red Leaf swim teams delivered standout performances against four colleges. The women topped Ottawa University Arizona (244-33) and Arizona Christian University (240-65), and the men scored wins over Ottawa (258-44) and ACU (256-52). Both teams battled fiercely against powerful Division I opponents, with the women falling to Grand Canyon University (82-258) and New Mexico State (39-127), and the men finishing second against GCU (220-93).

Sophomore Lukas Buck (Squamish, BC) led the men's squad with one of the meet's top performances, tying for first in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:47.36. That time places Buck fifth on the Red Leaf all-time top five list. Freshman Evan Vellescig (Coquitlam, BC) was outstanding across multiple races, capturing the win in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:02.26, while also recording a season-best 55.79 for second place in the 100-yard breaststroke, second in the 200-yard breast (2:02.18), and third in the 200-yard IM (1:52.01). 

Junior Owen Nicholson (Halifax, NS) took second in the 500-yard free with 4:35.22, followed closely by freshman Dominik Kwiecien (Grande Prairie, AB) who placed third. Kwiecien also claimed victory in the 1000 free (9:32.05), with fellow freshman Wilbur Ruckman-Utting (Burnaby, BC) finishing third. Robert Van Luven, a sophomore from Sechelt, BC, notched third in the 50-yard free, while Hudson Frayn (Grande Prairie, AB, freshman) earned third in the 100-yard breast. Senior Thomas Bakica (Whitehorse, YK) took third in the 200-yard breast, and junior Luka Tomic (Kitchener, ON) swam to second in the 200-yard fly with a 1:52.67 clocking. The men's 200-yard medley relay team (Buck, Vellescig, Tomic, Van Luven) secured second place in a fast 1:31.47.

On the women's squad, Senior Alyssa Whitmore (Newmarket, ON) continued her stellar season, swimming a season-best 51.43 for third in the 100-yard free and posting an NCAA championship B-cut in the 200-yard free (1:52.46). Whitmore also claimed third in the 100-yard fly (56.84). Sophomore Keira Kennedy (Calgary, AB) emerged as a distance powerhouse, winning the 500-yard free with a season-best 4:57.55 and notching an NCAA B-cut while setting a new Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center record in the 1000-yard free with a winning time of 10:09.14.

Kennedy added a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard IM. Freshman Jessica Dreghici (Kitchener, ON) and senior Delrae Vetter (Medicine Hat, AB) excelled in the 500-yard free, finishing second and third respectively. Vetter also placed fifth in the 400 IM. Junior Abby Andrews (St. John's, NL) raced to third in the 200-yard back (2:04.94, a season-best), just ahead of freshman Ryan Leslie (Maple Ridge, BC), who finished fourth. Freshman Priya Thomas (Red Deer, AB) turned in a season-best 2:23.36 for third in the 200-yard breast and also took third in the 400-yard IM.

The Red Leafs are off for a weekend, before they head to Los Angeles for the La Verne Winter Invitational from November 21-23.
