Biography

Majella CareyTownsville, Australia / St Margaret Mary's College / Lincoln University (MO)
Position: Forward / Centre
Height: 6'0"
Club Team: Townsville Basketball
Langford: “Majella is a physical post who can defend and rebound with authority and she will help us fill a hole on our team. She has had success in each stage of her development and one of her greatest assets is she communicates extremely effectively. She is a leader on the court who sees play develop and heightens her teammates’ awareness. Her coaches speak highly of all the intangibles that she brings to the game and we look forward to adding her skillset to our mix.”

Majella Carey transfers to Simon Fraser from Lincoln University of Missouri, where she redshirted the 2018-19 season. Prior to her move to the US, she graduated from St Margaret Mary’s College in Townsville, Australia in 2017. The six-feet forward/centre was a major part of the school’s championship-winning basketball team. Carey led her team to the 2017 Champion Basketball School of Queensland (CBSQ) Championship Division crown. Her team then advanced to the Australian Schools Basketball Championships and took home the gold medal. She averaged 19.4 points over the five-game tournament and had 12.2 rebounds per game.

Carey is the recipient of the 2017 Pierre de Coubertin Award from the Queensland Olympic Council, which acknowledges individuals who demonstrate initiative, teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play through the participation of sports in the competitive arena. In addition to her skills on the court, Carey had also been recognized for her academic excellence in high school. She will be pursuing a major in Communication at SFU.

Why SFU? “I heard about the SFU from a Canadian coach I played for and she said that the program has had great success on and off the court. Coach Langford is a great coach who I can gain knowledge from and the school is in a great location!”
