While born in Canada, Miriam has spent most of her life in Finland and will bring a unique set of skills and experience to our team. She is an excellent student and her size makes her a strong physical presence at the net, which is invaluable at the middle blocker position."
 
Miriam Jauhiainen will be coming to Simon Fraser from Tampere, Finland. Born in Vancouver, she grew up in England and Finland and she is looking forward to living in Canada this Fall. The six-foot-two middle blocker is a top student at Kalevan Lukio and she plays club volleyball with Kalevan Lentopallo. Her team earned top 12 finishes in four of the past six years in the Finnish junior leagues. Jauhiainen was also a part of the Southwestern Finland team that finished first in the 2016 U18 Finnish regional tournament. She intends to study Criminology at SFU.

"Choosing an academically strong university was important to me and SFU was a great option since it is a great school with an excellent Criminology program," Jauhiainen explained. "In terms of volleyball, besides the fact that the team is really good, I think Gina is a great coach and she will help me improve a lot as a player. She has remarkably improved the volleyball program during the last few years so I'm really excited to be a part of it. SFU competes in NCAA but is still a Canadian school so I get the best of both worlds."
