The Mission of the Simon Fraser University NCAA Division II SAAC is to enhance the student-athlete experience through social and academic opportunities, ensuring student-athlete prosperity through effective communication between the athletic body and the administration, and fostering a positive student-athlete image within our community.
Each institution in the NCAA has their own SAAC made up of student-athletes from their school. As a committee, we are responsible for representing the student-athlete voice on campus to various organizations, as well as serving as a liaison between the administration and student-athletes.
At SAAC, we have chosen to accomplish our mission through our focus in five main areas. These areas are - Media & Communications, Community Involvement, Social Events, and Game Day Events. Each of our student-athlete members are a part of a 'team' within SAAC that has one of the areas of focus listed above. We have 1 president and 2 vice presidents, each responsible for one or multiple teams.
Media & Communications
The Media & Communication Team is responsible for providing a social media presence to help communicate our various events and initiatives to the student-athlete body as well as the general student body. This involves the operation of our Instagram and Twitter platforms. The members of this team also are responsible for the SAACs involvement in various NCAA campaigns such as Diversity and Inclusion Week.
Community Involvement
The Community Involvement Team is responsible for establishing partnerships with campus and community groups to create philanthropic opportunities for student-athletes. They organize volunteer and fundraising events, seeking to engage student-athletes and help them get involved. Fundraising often coincides with SAAC's major social and school spirit events, enabling them to work closely with other teams within SAAC. Their fundraising efforts have largely been focused on the Make-A-Wish Foundation B.C. & Yukon and the Operation Christmas Child Initiative, while volunteering initiatives have been largely centered around Special Olympics and Friends of Simon.
Game Day Events
The Game Day Events Team is responsible for planning, set-up and coordination of SAACs game-day event activities at SFU. This role involves setting out which games will allow us to be most successful in running SAAC events, such as Bake Sales and our annual Thrift Shop. This team also includes a group of energetic and involved student-athletes that focus on encouraging participation from the student body and student athletes at SFU varsity games. This group also helps to elevate excitement at our home varsity games and engage various student groups in order to promote inclusion and diversity at varsity events.
Social Events
The Social Events Team is responsible for the planning and organization of events held on non-game days and events off campus whose proceeds contribute to our fundraising goals. These events would include bowling, pub nights, winter gala, and spring after-gala. The main focus of this team is to continue the success of these events while also being mindful of their limitations and finding new ways to improve the events.
