Biography

A Basketball Legacy
Makenna's passion for basketball is rooted in her family. Growing up in the gym, she was influenced by her mother, a coach at Trinity Western, and her older brother, a multi-talented athlete. Makenna recalls early mornings spent shooting hoops with her brother, driven by a shared competitive spirit.
 
The High School Years
Makenna's high school basketball experience at Langley Christian was both challenging and rewarding. At a small school known for volleyball, she emerged as a leader in the basketball team, helping her team improve their rankings in provincials over the years. Makenna also played for VK Basketball, her experience at VK provided her with competitive opportunities that helped prepare her for university-level play.
 
The Recruitment Journey
The recruitment process, though stressful, was made easier by the support of SFU's coaching staff. Regular attendance at SFU camps from a young age helped Makenna build a strong relationship with the coaches, which played a role in her decision to sign with the team. Her first year was particularly tough due to the pandemic, affecting her ability to connect with teammates. She overcame the challenge by maintaining her commitment to the team and finding support in SFU’s assistant coach at the time, who became a mentor.
 
Playing Style and Team Impact
In discovering her role on the team, Makenna overcame timidity by working on aspects of her game that she now takes pride in—in her case, defense—reminding herself, "Even if my shot isn't falling, I know I can bring strong defense and be a reliable presence on the court." Today, Makenna describes herself as a team-first player, known for her unselfish play. She also prides herself on her basketball IQ as well as her ability to create opportunities for her teammates. As a point guard, she sees herself as a facilitator on the court, bridging communication between the coach and her teammates.
 
Academic Pursuits
Makenna is currently majoring in Psychology and minors in counselling and human development; reflecting her interest in nurturing both the mind and body of her and the people around her.
 
Family Support and Personal Growth
Makenna has been supported by her family, who have been her biggest cheerleaders. Their presence at her games and their firm belief in her abilities have been a source of strength. Makenna also credits her faith as a guiding force, helping her steer through trials and stay grounded.
 
Looking Ahead
As Makenna enters her senior year, she aims to seize more opportunities and assert herself on the court to benefit the team. She hopes to leave a lasting impact on the team, furthering the culture of camaraderie. Her journey at SFU has been one of personal and athletic growth, and she looks forward to what the future holds.
 
Through her story, Makenna Gardner represents the passion that defines a true athlete. Her journey is a demonstration to the power of family, faith and hard work in shaping one's path both on and off the court.
