Roots and Rallies in New Westminster
Born in Vancouver and raised in New Westminster, BC, Anja has lived in the same house her entire life. Growing up with three older siblings, she was surrounded by a supportive family environment that encouraged her athletic pursuits.
 
A Switch from Soccer to Basketball
Anja's sports journey began with soccer, but the cold and slow pace led her to explore basketball in grade 4. Encouraged by her parents, she joined for fun with friends, and by grade 7, her interest in the game deepened. Basketball became a way to stay active and enjoy herself, even through challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Pursuing Competitive Basketball
As Anja's skills developed, she played more competitively in high school and eventually at Douglas College. Though team sports has its ups and downs, basketball remained a constant source of joy. Winning the PacWest Championship and earning second-team all-star honors in 2023-2024 highlighted her success at Douglas.
 
The Transition to SFU
After three years at Douglas, Anja knew she wanted to play at a higher level and complete her degree. Reaching out to various universities, she found SFU appealing due to its proximity and the opportunity to stay at home. Coach Langford's quick response with a walk-on opportunity sealed the deal, and she embraced the challenge of this new chapter.
 
On the Court: Speed and Vision
Anja is a quick, tough player with excellent court vision. As a point guard, she likes to attack the hoop. She brings defensive effort and intensity to every game.
 
Family Support and Influence
Living at home has allowed Anja to maintain strong family connections. Her siblings and parents have been instrumental in her development, offering encouragement. Her family’s belief in her success has been a driving force, and they eagerly anticipate supporting her at games, decked out in their red SFU gear.
 
Goals for the Season
Anja aims to be a valuable role player, focusing on defense and team dynamics. She wants to grow mentally and skillfully throughout the season, contributing to her team's success. Her goal is to leave each game knowing she gave her all and improved as a player.
 
Beyond Basketball: Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Anja dreams of living in a different city, possibly pursuing a master’s in environmental science. With citizenship in the UK and family ties to Sweden and Norway, she envisions exploring these countries. Professional basketball always remains a goal she aspires for so long as her passion for the game endures.
 
Balancing Academics and Athletics
Managing school and basketball requires discipline. Anja views practice as a mental break from academics, allowing her to focus on the moment. Living at home provides stability, and her routine includes commuting to campus for early morning workouts and classes.
