Surrey native Nicole Vander Helm returns to her home province of British Columbia after spending two seasons at Santa Clara University, a Division I institution. The six-foot guard was an honour roll student at Holy Cross Regional High School and won the AA provincial title in her Grade 10 year under SFU alumnus Steve Beauchamp. In her senior season, she scored 47 points in a contest, tying a high school basketball record. Vander Helm was a member of Team BC for four years and played alongside Clan players Sophie Swant and Jessica Jones in 2014.

“I chose to come to SFU because I wanted to be a part of a very special basketball program and attend a university that was strong academically while being close to home,” explained Vander Helm. “I am a passionate and dedicated blue collared player. My skillset is versatile as I am a taller guard and have good court vision in transition and in the half court. I have a strong work ethic and love to compete and go to war with my teammates.”

Langford: "Our team took a competitive step forward during the 2016-17 season and adding Nicole is a good fit to enhance us in that area. She is competitive player who can shoot the ball, take it to the hoop and has good size to take advantage of any mismatches.”
