A Journey from Hesitation to Passion
Sahnya's introduction to basketball was anything but love at first sight. Enrolled in basketball camps at the age of 5, she found herself initially overwhelmed, often feeling out of place among her male peers. However, her parents encouraged her to persist, recognizing her height and potential. Over time, Sahnya's involvement in leagues like the Steve Nash and AYBL helped her develop a deeper connection to the sport.
 
Finding Her Place
The turning point came at age 12 when Sahnya joined a club team and began to enjoy the camaraderie and support from her coaches. Playing for VK Basketball and later under Coach Langford, she discovered a genuine love for the game. By grade 10, Sahnya decided to take basketball seriously, aspiring to play at the university level.
 
High School Highlights
Throughout high school, Sahnya faced challenges that tested her resolve. Competing against older and more experienced players, she learned to leverage her height and skills as a forward. Despite the intimidation factor, Sahnya's determination to outwork her opponents fueled her growth as a player. Her proudest moment came in grade 12 when she scored 36 points in her final high school game, leading her team to 3rd place at provincials.
 
Transition to University
The shift from Brookswood secondary to SFU was challenging. The increased responsibility required Sahnya to adapt quickly. She embraced the intense trainings and academic schedule, finding balance with support from her family and teammates.
 
Impact and Aspirations
As a forward, Sahnya is known for her team-first mentality. She is diligently bettering herself in order for her teammates to see her as a reliable presence who contributes to the team's success. For her coaches, Sahnya aims to fulfill the potential they see in her, continuously growing aspects of her game with consideration of the position she plays.
 
Family and Support
Sahnya’s family has supported her, from early morning weight training sessions to attending games—which has been instrumental in her development. Living close to home allows her to maintain ties, offering Sahnya with comfort and motivation.
 
Academic Pursuits and Future Dreams
Sahnya is pursuing a major in Education which aligns with her interests in teaching young children. She was an Honor roll student at Lord Tweedsmuir and Brookswood secondary schools, where she has done over 300 hours of volunteer work in a classroom environment. Looking ahead, she dreams of using her experiences to make a positive impact in her community.
 
Beyond Basketball
Outside of basketball, Sahnya enjoys reading thrillers and finding moments of relaxation amidst her busy schedule. Her love for books provides a welcome escape and balances her athletic commitments.
 
With big shoes to fill on the team, Sahnya is eager to step up and demonstrate her capabilities. She is committed to proving herself and contributing to the team's success this year.
