Biography

From the Pool to the Court
Born and raised in Burnaby, Sophia has been a "Burnaby gal" her entire life. Her athletic journey began with competitive swimming, a sport she embraced from a young age. However, by grade 8, she discovered basketball, thanks to her father's influence and her natural height advantage.

The Transition to Basketball
Sophia initially dipped her toes into basketball in grade 5, but it wasn't until grade 9 that she fully committed, deciding to quit swimming to focus on the court. The faster pace of basketball excited her.

Struggles and Resilience
Unlike many athletes, Sophia was willing to share her struggles with mental health. Fear of judgment and performance anxiety took a toll on her, leading her to take a two-week break. During this time, she focused on mental health, working with a therapist to build confidence. This break allowed her to return to the game with renewed determination. Her ability to face this challenge many dismiss, is what is leading her to the portrayal of greatness she has to offer.

A New Chapter: The Recruitment Process
After her high school team lost in the provincials, she realized how much she missed the game. Already accepted into SFU's Business program, she reached out to Coach Langford with a heartfelt email and a well-crafted mixtape. Her passion and potential caught the coach's attention, leading to her signing with the team.

Adjusting to University Basketball
Transitioning to university-level basketball has been both challenging and rewarding for Sophia. The intensity and seriousness of the game at SFU requires her to adjust not only her physically but mentally. As a forward, her speed and ability to read the offense to make good plays has given her a competitive edge.

Family: A Pillar of Support
Sophia’s father's encouragement to persevere through difficulties and her mother's emphasis on balance have provided a supportive environment. Their belief in her abilities has been crucial, especially when deciding to pursue basketball at SFU.

Balancing Academics and Athletics
Sophia prioritizes her studies alongside basketball, employing time management to succeed in both areas. Her routine involves early mornings, focused study sessions, and a commitment to using every spare moment productively. This disciplined approach helps her maintain a balance between academics and athletics.

Looking to the Future
While still exploring her career path, Sophia is pursuing a degree in business with an interest in management. Her leadership skills and love for organization make this a natural fit. She is also open to the possibility of psychology, inspired by her experiences with therapy. Regardless of the path she chooses, Sophia is determined to make a positive impact, drawing on her strengths and personal experiences.
