Biography
Sophie Klassen – Chilliwack, BC / Sardis Secondary
Position: Guard/Forward
Height: 6'0"
Club Team: BC's Finest Basketball
Langford: "Sophie is a very active, get-after-it type player. Being extremely fit, as well was long and lanky, she will help us with the style of defense we want to play. As with most rookies, once she hits the weights and gets stronger, Sophie will be able to contribute an all-around type game. She drives the ball well, is good defensively, crashes the boards hard getting quite a few put backs a game and is able to hit the three-point shot."
Sophie Klassen of Chilliwack is a top student at Sardis Secondary, where she has maintained a 4.0 GPA since Grade 10. She received the Academic Proficiency Award in Grades 10 and 11 and earned an academic entrance scholarship to SFU. Athletically, the six-foot guard/forward averaged 27 points per game in her senior season at Sardis under head coach Gina Graves while picking up 9.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 2.5 steals per game. Klassen was one of BC Sports Hub's top 20 Grade 12 players and received Fraser Valley high school girls basketball all-star recognition. She plays club basketball for BC's Finest with Frank Konig and Darren Johnson and spends time improving her skillset with Elle Kerfoot. Klassen is active in the community as she volunteers with several local organizations and serves as a coach for the Evans Elementary School Basketball Academy.
"I chose SFU because I wanted to be far enough from home that I would feel like I had my own independence, yet be close enough that I didn't have to catch a flight if I wanted to see my family," Klassen explained. "SFU also offers the best of both academics and athletics in Canada. The school is known for its high-class academics which is a top priority of mine and competes at the highest level of athletics in Canada. I knew that my game would be brought to a whole new level and that I would be extremely challenged within the basketball program." Klassen will begin working towards a Bachelor of Science starting in September.
