ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team finished the Disney Tip-Off Classic with a perfect 3-0 record after defeating the eighth ranked University of California-San Diego Tritons, 61-58 on Sunday night.
The win caps off the season opening weekend for the SFU women, who also defeated the 13th-ranked Grand Canyon Antelopes and the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs as the Clan took the first three games of their non-conference schedule.
"We played well tonight and once again, different people stepped up and contributed," said head coach
Bruce Langford. "We tried to limit their threes because they can really shoot the ball. We were quite successful in that and we did a good job taking care of the ball."
The Clan limited UC-San Diego to 38.5 per cent on three pointers in the game while SFU shot 50 percent from beyond the arc.
Three members of the Clan scored in double figures in the game, led by
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto) who had 22 points.
She was followed by
Erin Chambers (Mission, B.C.) who had 15 and
Marie-Line Petit (Bergeronnes, Que.) who had 10.
Chambers finished up the Disney Tip-Off Classic with the highest free throw percentage of any player, as she was a perfect 15 for 15.
Raincock-Ekunwe also led the Clan in rebounds with nine while Petit was a perfect three for three from beyond the arc.
The Tritons were led by Emily Osga who had 16 points and Daisy Feder who had 14.
The game was closely contested, as the two sides were tied 12 times, the lead changed 10 times and neither team led by more than five points at any time.
Kristina Collins (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) opened the scoring when she drained a pair of free throws, only to have UC-San Diego tie the game and then take a 4-2 lead.
With 5:24 remaining in the half and the Clan ahead by two,
Chelsea Reist (Mission, B.C.) hit a jumper to give the Clan a 21-17 lead. The lead was short lived, as the Tritons outscored SFU 8-1 in the final five minutes of the half to take a 25-22 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
UC San Diego held a four point advantage with 9:31 to play before the Clan went on a 7-0, capped by a Raincock-Ekunwe free throw to give SFU a slight advantage.
While the Tritons would not lead again in the game, the score would be tied three more times.
With 2:21 to play, Feder tied the game for UC-San Diego when she converted on a layup but SFU took the lead right back, as Petit hit a clutch three on the ensuing Clan possession.
UC-San Diego had one more chance to take the lead on their final possession and the Clan holding a slim 59-58 lead.
The Clan defence held strong though, forcing a shot clock violation which was followed up by a long inbound pass from Collins that Raincock-Ekunwe caught and laid into the basket to seal the win for SFU.
The Clan women will continue the non-conference portion of their schedule next weekend when they travel to St. George, Utah, to face Colorado Mesa in a neutral site non-conference game on Friday and the host Dixie State College Red Storm on Saturday.
