Clan win big over Capilano

BURNABY, B.C. - Remaining undefeated, the Simon Fraser University men's basketball team earned their fourth consecutive win on Wednesday night, this time defeating the Capilano University Blues, 77-48.

"Winning four games definitely gives us a lot of confidence in that we're playing well going into the two road games," said David Gebru (Seattle, WA). "We need to make sure we stay focused and mentally prepared in order to play with the same toughness that we have been.  It's only going to get tougher from here."

Gebru, who transferred to the Clan from division I Western Illinois University, finished with a 21 points to lead the Clan.

Also landing in double digits was Matt Raivio (Vancouver, WA) who grabbed 10.

Despite fouling out, Ibrahim Appiah (Montreal, QC) ended the night with 13 rebounds to lead SFU.

Forward Reng Gum Gum led Capilano with 10 points while Lucas Putnam-Rea added 9 while Wesley Dekleer had nine rebounds for the Blues.

"They were really aggressive on the offensive boards.  What really helped them is the second shot attempts they got off those rebounds.  Preventing that situation is what we really needed to focus on," continued Gebru.

Capilano outrebounded the Clan 43-40 and grabbed 19 offensive boards in the game.

Capilano held the lead after the first possession of the game, but it was the only time the Blues would be ahead of the Clan.

SFU took off on a 21-4 run gaining a 27-10 advantage. Over the next four minutes, the Clan kept the Blue's scoreless and expanded their lead to 20.

Capilano used three costly fouls to chip away at SFU's lead bringing the Blues within 14 at halftime, as the score was 37-23.

Starting the second half on a 6-0 run, the Clan rebuilt the 20-point advantage, leading 43-23.

Answering with a 8-0 run, Capilano cut SFU's lead to 12 with 15:03 left to play, however, the Clan kept pressure on the Blues and with a 14-2 run,  creating their largest lead of the night at 31 points.

On the defensive end, SFU caused 31 Capilano turnovers while committing only 12.

The win keeps the Clan undefeated with a 4-0 record as they head out on a two-game road trip.

SFU will travel to California to face Fresno Pacific on Friday, November 23 at 5 p.m. before facing Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at 7 p.m.
