Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball hosted their 2012 home opener against Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night, defeating the Warriors 95-52 in the West Gym.
With a large crowd in attendance for the Clan's first home game as full members of the NCAA, the 726 people in attendance were boisterous from start to finish.
“The girls came out a bit nervous tonight,” said head coach
Bruce Langford. “At the half we talked about taking our time and not rushing the play. The atmosphere was great tonight. Basketball's a game of momentum and when the crowd's into it like that, it keeps you going."
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) would lead the all players with 22 points on the night, followed by teammate
Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) who scored 20 points during her 20 minutes of playing time.
Raincock-Ekunwe would record her fourth double-double of the season by the halfway mark of the game, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the first half.
She would finish the game with 15 rebounds.
"We wanted to come out strong," said Raincock-Ekunwe. "Last weekend was a bit shaky so it was good to play well tonight. The crowd was outstanding and helped us along."
The Clan did a good job of capitalizing on turnovers, outscoring the Warriors 33-5.
The SFU bench also outscored Cal State Stanislaus 36-13 and the Clan had 46 points in the paint to 28 for the Warriors.
Play began quite evenly matched as the Clan started slow out of the gates, and at the ten minute mark in the first half the Clan led 20-19.
The back and forth action would continue the entire half and would end with the Clan 11 points in the lead, 38-27.
In the second half, the Clan pulled away from Cal State extending their lead with a 15-2 run to open the half.
Kia Van Laare (New Westminster, BC) added 11 points in the second period and freshman
Meg Wilson (London, ON) earned 10 points in the final 20 minutes.
With the win, the Clan improve to 5-1 on the season, all non-conference matches.
The women will take the highs from Friday's game into a re-match on Saturday against Cal State Stanislaus, again at 7:00 p.m. Students are free.
