Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team faced Cal State Stanislaus for the second time in as many nights on Saturday, sending the Warriors home with a second loss with a 76-46 victory.
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) led all Clan players with 16 points, closely following Cal State's Natalie Winters who scored the evening's high 18 points.
Raincock-Ekunwe would add 13 rebounds to the Clan's efforts, earning her fifth double-double of the season.
Rebecca Langmead (Torbey, NL) had a big night for the Clan as well finishing the evening with a game high of seven blocks as well as ten rebounds and eight points.
Marie-Line Petit (Bergeronnes, QC) led the Clan with six assists.
“KC (
Kristina Collins) was injured tonight and I had to step into the starting position,” said Petit. “It was amazing to have such great support from the team; I know what my role is and I accomplished what I had to do tonight.”
Play began similar to the two teams first match-up as both sides struggled to out-do the other in the opening minutes. Some back and forth play and hard defense resulted in a lower scoring first half than Friday's game.
The Clan managed to take a strong lead over the Warriors near the middle of the first period, and never looked back finishing the first 20 minutes with a 20 point lead, up 35-15.
In the second half, SFU would add to their lead as all nine Clan athletes would add points to the team's cause.
The Clan bench scored 31 points on the night, as all players got lots of playing time including freshmen
Belce Yoruk (Kesan, Turkey) and
Meg Wilson (London, ON) who would each add eight points for SFU.
The Warriors did not back down, doubling their first period score with 31 points in the second half of play.
The Clan came right back making good use of Cal States mistakes, scoring a total of 29 points of of turnovers.
At the end, the Clan would defeat Stanislaus by 30 points.
With the win, the Clan's record is now 6-1 heading into conference play next week.
The Clan are back in action as they host their Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener Thursday, November 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the West Gym against Saint Martin's University. Admission is free for SFU students.
