Chambers leads the Clan past Central Washington

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team got back to their winning ways on Saturday night, defeating the Central Washington Wildcats 66-58.

Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) led the Clan and all scorers with 21 points in the game.  She also had three rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal.

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) was the only other SFU player to reach double digits, scoring 12 points. She also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds along with Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB).

"We were in foul trouble all night," said head coach Bruce Langford. "We got great rebounding from Kristina (Collins) and Katie (Lowen). Chelsea (Reist) and Meg (Wilson) did a good job as well. We were excellent defensively in the first half and Erin was very good offensively in the early going. She hit a big three late as did Kia Van Laare to secure the win."

Jessica VanDyke led Central Washington with 20 points.  VanDyke had a double double in the game as she also pulled in 10 rebounds.

The Clan capitalized on the Wildcats turnovers, outscoring CWU 29-14 off turnovers. SFU also won the battle in the paint outscoring Central 24-16 and scored 15 second chance points to nine for CWU.

Kristina Collins (Port Coquitlam, BC) opened the scoring for SFU with a jumper 44 seconds into the game.

The home side responded with a three ball from Leslie Stillar with 17:02 remaining in the half and the Wildcats would lead for the next five minutes until Chambers tied the score at 10 apiece with a jump shot.

Meg Wilson (London, ON) gave the Clan back the lead with a layup to make it 12-10 for SFU with 12:02 remaining in the half. The Wildcats would not lead again.

Wilson's layup was part of a 21-0 run for the Clan that made the score 27-10 in favour of SFU. The 17-point lead would be SFU's largest of the game.

The Clan went into the locker room at halftime with a 31-19 lead.

In the second half, SFU built their lead back up to as much as 14 and while the Wildcats chipped away late, the Clan's defence held strong, as SFU took the eight point victory.

With the win, the Clan's record improves to 14-3 on the season, 7-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

The Clan women will return home to host Alaska Anchorage in the West Gym on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. The game will be the back end of a double header, as the SFU men host Seattle Pacific at 5:15 p.m.

In between the two games, the Clan men's soccer team will receive the 2012 West Region Championship rings in a special ceremony.
