Clan lose at Central Washington

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Simon Fraser University volleyball team wrapped up their road trip to Idaho and Washington with a three sets to one loss to the Central Washington Wildcats on Saturday night.

The Clan dropped the first, third and fourth sets, 25-21, 25-13 and 25-20 while they won the second set 26-24.

"We competed better tonight," said Head Coach Gina Schmidt. "Our passing and defence was steady but we weren't able to convert on offence in key moments."

Kelsey Robinson (Surrey, B.C.) once again led the Clan in kills with 19 in the game while Devon May (Roberts Creek, B.C.) also hit double digits with 11.

Three Clan players recorded double digits in digs as Alanna Chan (Port Moody, B.C.) led the team with 28, Robinson had 24 and Brooklynn Gould-Bradbury (Seattle, Wash.) had 10.

Gould-Bradbury also led the team in assists with 33 while Tamara Nipp (Vancouver, B.C.) had 10.

The first set was close throughout, as the score was tied eight times. With the score tied at 10, the home side began pulling away, eventually taking it by four points.

The second set was even closer as the score was tied nine times. Facing set point with the score at 24-23 in CWU's favour, the Clan rattled off three straight points to take the set and tie the match at one.

CWU proved too much for the Clan in the third set and in the fourth, the Clan built up a six point lead at 12-6 before the Wildcats came back to take the set by five and the match three sets to one.

With the loss, the Clan's record evens out at 9-9 on the season and drops to 4-8 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

SFU will return home next week to host the Saint Martin's Saints in the West Gym at 7 p.m. on Thursday and the Western Oregon Wolves at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
