Second half surge keeps Clan undefeated at home

11/23/2013 10:14:00 PM

Box Score Burnaby, BC- Continuing their win streak, the Simon Fraser University men's basketball team defeated the San Francisco Academy of Art Urban Knights, 78-75.

"Our team needs to remember that once you step on the court, it's anybody's game. You have to come and be ready to play. We came out flat and didn't respect the other team, and it showed in the first five minutes," said Head Coach James Blake.

"I think our seniors got a bit away from themselves, but we had great sophomores and juniors that came out to play in the absence of those guys."

Facing trouble in the early moments, the Clan stepped up late in the first half and through the second to secure the victory.

"We picked up our game defensively in the second half and shots started to fall as we swung the ball more on offense," said junior transfer Justin Cole (Los Angeles, CA), who finished the night with 14 points for the Clan.

Sango Niang (Paris, France) topped SFU players for the night, leading with 19 points and six assists, while Elijah Matthews (Washington, DC) hit double-digits as well, adding 12.

Ibrahim Appiah (Montreal, QC) led the team in rebounds, grabbing nine while chipping in 10 points.

Alexis Moore led all players with 20 points while Alex Carmon scored 15 for the Urban Knight's.

Academy's defence set up an initial block for the Clan as the Knights held the Clan scoreless the first four minutes of the game.

Matthews broke through the defensive block to put SFU on the board, bringing the score to 7-2 with 16:08 to go in the first half.

The Clan continued to struggle until a 16-2 run cut the visiting team's lead 26-22 as 5:28 sat on the clock until halftime.

Finally gaining the momentum in the game, a nothing-but-net three-point shot from Niang gave SFU a 29-28 lead with 2:36 remaining in the first twenty minutes of play.

The home team continued to surge, closing the first half on a 6-3 run, sending the team into the break with a 32-31 edge.

SFU continued to surge in the second half, giving up the lead only once early in the first four minutes of play.

With 16:52 to go, a converted layup from Carmon tied the score at 38 apiece.

The Clan answered with a 16-2 run to gain back lead and bring the score 54-40 with 11:30 remaining.

Academy continued to challenge SFU in the final seconds of the game as Alexis Moore knocked down a three-point basket.

Fouled on the play, Moore followed the shot with a converted free throw, finishing the game with the 78-75 score.

The win brings the team's record to 5-1 in non-conference play.

SFU will continue their home-stand on Tuesday, November 26 when they host the Kwantlen Eagles at 7:30 p.m.

"We need to focus on starting the game strong in offensively and defensively, and make sure everybody is ready to go from the start," finished Cole.
