Clan complete season sweep of NNU

NAMPA, Idaho – The Simon Fraser University softball team received back to back complete games from pitchers Cara Lukawesky (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, B.C.) en route to a Thursday afternoon double header sweep of the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders.

The Clan took game one 4-1 and game two 6-0. It wrapped up the Clan's season series with NNU as SFU won both games against the Crusaders at Beedie Field in Burnaby earlier this season.

"We received two solid pitching performances against NNU," said Head Coach Mike Renney. "At times we did some nice things offensively. We manufactured runs. We had a double steal, we squeezed in a run and our first run in the second game was on a sacrifice fly. We're playing good base to base softball right now."

Lukawesky started game one and pitched seven innings against NNU, allowing two hits and just one run which was unearned. She struck out five in the game.

With the win, Lukawesky's record moves to 6-7 on the season.

NNU's lone run came with SFU leading in the fourth inning 4-0, and crossed thanks to a couple of Clan errors.

Kaitlyn Cameron (Langley, B.C.) got the Clan offence started in game one with a two run double that scored Lauren Mew (Vancouver) and Trisha Bouchard (Montreal) to make it 2-0 for SFU.

The Clan added a run in the second and then got some more insurance in the fourth when Danielle Raison (Langley, B.C.) reached on a one out single in the fourth inning and came around to score after two more hits, singles by Cameron and Lauren Kolanko (North Vancouver, B.C.).

After NNU's run in the fourth Lukawesky shut down the Crusader offence as SFU took the three run game one victory.

Simon Fraser got hits from seven different players in game two as Hawkins pitched a complete game shutout, going seven innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight in the game.

The win improved Hawkins' record to 8-4 on the year.

Bouchard led the Clan offence going two for four with two runs batted in while Mackenzie Bender (St. Albert, Alta.), Nicole Ratel (Langley, B.C.) and Rachel Kolanko (North Vancouver, B.C.) each chipped in an RBI to the Clan cause.

SFU opened the scoring in the second inning when the Clan capitalized on a leadoff double from Cameron. She advanced to third on a ground out and then scored on a Bender sacrifice fly.

The Clan got three hits and took advantage of two NNU errors in the third to score twice.

Carly Lepoutre (Pickering, Ont.) got on base with a single and advanced to second on an error. She then advanced to third on an infield single by Mew.

Mew then stole second and advanced to third as Lepoutre scored from third on a throwing error by the catcher. Bouchard then pushed Mew across on a squeeze bunt to make it 3-0.

The Clan added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

"I would still like to see more offensive production. Some of the bright lights from early in the season have gone dim but the reality is we're sharing the workload. Seven different hitters had hits in game two. Once we had a lead Hawkins was really in control," continued Renney.

With the wins, the Clan improve to 15-13 on the season and 11-3 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference place.

SFU will now travel to Ellensburg, Washington, where they will face the Central Washington Wildcats on Saturday.

"Central swept Western and they're on a high right now. They've won a few games in a row. It's going to be a dogfight for those four playoff spots because the standings are going to bunch up pretty quick so we've got to be ready to play," finished Renney.
