Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University volleyball team got their first win of the young 2013 season and Head Coach
Gina Schmidt recorded her first win as a head coach in the process as the SFU volleyball team defeated Thompson Rivers in straight sets.
"I thought we did a good job of coming back from a disappointing loss last night and just playing steady throughout the whole game. They were able to adjust to whatever came at them today," said Schmidt. "I think we can take things away from every match. I hope our team takes away the positives from this match and the things we have to learn from as well."
Kelsey Robinson (Surrey, BC) led the Clan in both kills and digs, with 15 and 12 respectively.
Amanda Renkema (Delta, BC) followed in kills with 10 and
Alison McKay (Port Moody, BC), making her first start at libero for SFU, had 10 digs.
The first set was close throughout as the score was tied at seven in the early going. From there the Clan went on an 11-5 run to open up a six point lead before eventually taking the set, 25-23.
The second set was never in doubt as the Clan jumped out to a 7-2 lead, eventually taking the set 25-13.
In the third an final set, TRU attempted to make a comeback with a late lead in the set at 20-17 but a well timed timeout call for the Clan sparked the home side led to an 8-3 Clan run to close out the set, and the match.
With the win, the Clan improve to 1-1 in non-conference action on the season and will be back in action tonight at 7:30 p.m. to close our the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown Invitational against the Columbia Bible College Bearcats.
