Box Score Bismarck, ND – The Simon Fraser University men's soccer team completed their tour of the Dakotas Saturday, defeating University of Mary 3-1.
"It was a great trip for the guys," said head coach
Alan Koch of the weekend. "They earned six points and put in another good performance today."
Captain
Jovan Blagojevic and sophomore
Mateo Espinosa each scored for the second game in a row; Blagojevic's 12
th and Espinosa's second of the season.
Espinosa's goal came in the 16
th minute off a
Robert Hyams assist, putting the Clan up 1-0 early.
Blagojevic doubled the score ten minutes later as he headed-in a
Calvin Opperman cross.
The Clan had 12 shots in the first half and ten more in the second, as Maurauder goalkeeper Michael Frenzel was forced to make six saves on the night.
In the second half the Clan looked poised to maintain control of the game, and held the 2-0 lead until the 67
th minute when
Niko Schroettle chipped in another Hyams through-ball, improving the score to 3-0.
The Maurauders continued to pressure the Clan, and their efforts were rewarded in the 70
th minute as a scramble off a corner kick led to a goal in the home side's favour.
The 3-1 score would stand the remainder of the game as the Clan would take their second consecutive win.
"This group is heading in the right direction," continued Koch. "The young players are continuing to grow and the older guys are finding their form. We look forward to coming home to Fox Field this week."
With the win the Clan move to a 3-2-2 record in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and a 5-3-2 record overall.
SFU is back in action this Thursday as they host Seattle Pacific followed by Saint Martin's on Saturday.
Kick off against the Falcons is at 7:30 p.m. on Terry Fox Field.
