This program is open to all grade 8 through grade 12  soccer players. If the student is enrolled within the Burnaby public school district, they will have the opportunity to complete their academic and elective requirements at one of the Burnaby Secondary Schools during the regular academic day. The SFU Soccer Year-Round Program will be running multiple cohorts next year in order to accommodate the different schedules of the eight Burnaby schools. Students attending Linear schools will be able to participate in the program during the TWO morning blocks of either Day 1 or Day 2. In addition, the students attending Semester schools will be able to participate in the program during the TWO morning blocks of either Semester 1 or Semester 2. The first day of the Soccer Year-Round Program for each participant will depend on their cohort. Students will be expected to meet at SFU by 8:45 a.m. each day and will be dismissed from SFU at approximately 11 a.m.

  • Program participants will be responsible for their own transportation needs. Regularly scheduled bus routes are readily available between SFU and area high schools)

The SFU Soccer Year-Round Program sessions will consist of on-field technical development, complemented by speed, strength and power training sessions, as well as classroom instruction in areas of nutrition, sport psychology and other areas related to the science of sport and training as applied to the game of soccer. Our training goals include:

To develop on-field technical ability

The SFU Soccer Year-Round Program will work to develop the fundamentals of the game. Technical focuses will include and not be limited to: passing, ball control, dribbling, shooting, individual and collective defending, heading, crossing and goalkeeping. As well as focusing on skill development, we will examine the game from the team parts: attacking and defending principles in 1v1, 2v2 and team shape. We will look at positional play and responsibilities, set plays, restarts, and participate in intra-squad games, coming away with a better understanding of different systems of play.

To maximize athletic performance through sport specific conditioning.
All participants will receive an initial physical assessment early in the year. There will be on-going assessment throughout the school year. Programs will target the following:

  • Muscular balance to best stabilize joints, prevent injury and facilitate performance
  • Enhance muscular endurance through anaerobic training and conditioning
  • Enhance cardiovascular potential
  • Increase general strength with emphasis on core
  • Maximize the power potential of the athlete through plyometric and power conversion training
  • Improve speed, agility, and reaction times of the athlete
  • Enhance flexibility

To provide the athlete with nutritional counseling

  • What foods are best for athletes?
  • When should these nutrients be consumed? (Pre-game, Post-game)
  • How much does the athlete need and in what proportions?
  • Should athletes take supplements? If so, what?
  • Importance of proper hydration

2025-2026 SFU Soccer Year-Round Program Schedule

As a result of some schools keeping the semester schedule, and some moving back to linear, the program will be offered in the following formats:

Linear (students will attend every second day for a whole school year)
Day 1 Cohort (blocks 1&2)
Day 2 Cohort (blocks 5&6)

Semester (students will attend every day for one semester)
Semester 1 (mornings)
Semester 2 (mornings)

The student-athlete will attend their home secondary school for all, but the two blocks assigned to the program participation. The program sessions will run from approximately 8:45 - 11:00am. As a Burnaby District student, participants in the program on a yearly basis will earn 8 secondary school credits per year.

Please see the feedback form to gather information about participant choices. This information will allow us to determine the program for each student. With enrollment increasing, the group needs to be divided as indicated above. When each group is determined, we will be able to inform each school (i.e. Counselors and Administrators) so students can be scheduled appropriately.

As students consider their personal situations, they may need to meet with school counselors to discuss options. As an example, a student attending a semester school could choose the linear soccer schedule option, and then coordinate taking other courses online at the same time.

NOTE: Students in grades 10, 11, and 12 will receive elective credits for PE (10, 11, and 12), as well as elective credits for Sport Specific Training (10, 11, and 12). The SFU Soccer Year-Round Program will serve as the physical education component for grade 8 & 9 students, as well as an elective course in their timetable.
