Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University men's soccer team dropped a tightly contested match Thursday night falling 2-1 to No. 4 Seattle Pacific.
The Clan battled tightly with their nationally ranked opponents but were unable to finish in the second half, as the Falcons played them to a one goal game.
The Clan started strong as they have done all-season, as
Magnus Kristensen put home his first of the season; a header off an
Alex Rowley corner-kick in the fourth minute of play, to make it 1-0.
But the Falcons were quick to react as a streaking Sean Russell nearly put a shot past
Brandon Watson just moments later.
Watson found himself just outside the 18-yard box and was forced to play the shot with his head, the rebound from which found itself heading towards the Clan net.
Quick reaction from defender
Joel Malouf saved the goal as the senior rushed back to prevent the tying goal.
The resulting corner-kick again required quick thinking from the Clan defence as Watson's save gave up a rebound on the goal line, this time knocked away by
Johannes Hallman.
SFU continued to press earning three consecutive chances, but on the counter Stephen MacDonald was able to put one past Watson to tie the game 1-1 in the 15
th minute.
In the 28
th minute, a left-footed shot by Stephen MacDonald caught the post and rolled in past Watson to give the Falcons their first lead of the game.
The score stood at the half as the teams returned for period two, SFU hungry to tie the game and SPU hoping to maintain the lead.
The second half featured fewer shots by both teams as back and forth play ensued for the majority of the period.
The Clan had several chances to tie the game but goalkeeper Rodney Greiling, who subbed in at the half, kept the Falcons alive making four key stops.
Ryan Dhillon,
Callum Powell and
Niko Schroettle all had two shots for SFU, but the Clan were unable to even the score, the game ending 2-1.
With the loss the Clan move to 5-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
The Clan will be back in action on Saturday as they host the Saint Martin's Saints.
Kick-off on Terry Fox Field will be at 7:30 p.m.
