Belmont, Calif. – Senior forward
Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) and senior guard
Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) each scored in double figures as the Clan rolled out a 93-64 win over Notre Dame de Namur Argonauts in the season opening women's basketball game for both teams Friday.
Simon Fraser started slowly, conceding the game's first seven points, but ripped off a 13-1 run early in the first half and never looked back. Chambers converted a lay-up at the buzzer to give her 18 points in the half and send the game to the break at 45-30.
Chambers finished with a game-high 28 points for Simon Fraser on 10-of-16 shooting while Lowen added 20. Sophomore point guard
Ellen Kett (Niddrie, Australia) added eight points and six assists.
Simon Fraser shot 50% from the field in each half while the Argos hit just 20 of 70 for a 28.6% shooting percentage.
"I thought we shot the ball really well today and our hustle and get-after-it was pretty good," said Clan head coach
Bruce Langford. "We started slowly but once we got our offence going we shot the ball really well."
The Clan picked up where they left off in the second half, quickly extending their advantage to 19 in the opening minutes. The margin swelled to 31 in the closing minutes as the Clan stayed scorching hot from the field with another 50% shooting half.
"We can certainly score but I would prefer to see us play a little better defensively and keep our opponents in the low 50-point range," added Langford.
Simon Fraser was 11-of-27 from the three point line while the Argonauts were 4-of-24 from beyond the arc.
Taylor Dewees led the Argonauts with 16 points and four 3-pointers.
SFU is back in action tomorrow at noon with a game against Academy of Art Urban Knights.
