Clan Suffers First Loss of Non-Conference Season

SFU Inconsistent from Beyond-the-Arc, Fall 107-94 against the Penguins

San Francisco, CA - The Simon Fraser University men's basketball team fell 107-94 to Academy of Art University in the team's first non-conference match of the 2014 season.

Sango Niang (Paris, France) continued his Great Northwest Athletic Conference leading offence, recording 29 points and eight assists on the night, while fellow Chaffey Community College transfer Roderick Evans-Taylor (Uplands, CA) put up 13 points and 10 rebounds on the night of his 21st birthday for his second double-double of the season.

The Clan continued their high-scoring ways despite shooting only 8-40 from beyond the three-point arc, a statistic that has hindered what has been their most effective look heading through the first three games of the season.

"The shots weren't on tonight," said head coach James Blake. "I don't think you will see this team shoot that poorly again, but despite that the guys still played a hard 40-minutes."

The Clan opened the scoring as Michael Harper (Melbourne, AUS) found Patrick Simon (Port Coquitlam, BC) for a layup seven seconds into the game, and the two teams traded points through the majority of the first half, each team holding the lead nine times in the 20-minute period.

Trailing 40-38 with three minutes remaining in the half, Niang complete a three-point play to propel the Clan into the lead, as the team secured a 51-48 lead at the half-time buzzer.

In the second half, however, containment got the best of Simon Fraser as the Urban Knights were able to score 13 points off turnovers and 10 second-chance points, and out rebounding the Clan 58-35 throughout the match.

"We forced 30 turnovers tonight," Blake continued. "But we also didn't take care of the ball once we had the steal, throwing it out of bounds or forcing shots when it wasn't needed."

In the final six minutes Academy of Art took a 27-14 run to close out their 107-94 victory, capitalising off the Clan's loss of Taylor-Evans and Harper, sent off with five personal fouls each.

Simon and Harper contributed 12 and nine points respectively to the Clan's campaign, while Justin Cole (Los Angeles, CA) had 11.

The Clan suffered their first loss of the non-conference season and first loss to a Division II opponent, falling to 3-1 in the non-conference season.

"Tomorrow we will look to bounce back against Dominican," Blake finished. "Some guys played quite a bit tonight, so with back-to-back games we will look to use our bench to our advantage. We have excellent shooters through our line-up and will look to capitalise on that tomorrow."

The Clan close their California road-trip with a non-conference clash against Dominican University of California, in San Rafael, CA.

Tip-off against the Penguins is at 7:00 p.m. PST.
