Clan Sweeps Saints On Senior's Night

SFU wins final home game to send seniors off in style

The Simon Fraser University Clan volleyball team honoured their four graduating seniors on Saturday night, sweeping Saint Martin's University 3-0 in their final home game of the 2014 season.

Brooklynn Gould-Bradbury (Lake Tapps, WA), Madeline Hait (Burnaby, BC), Kelsey Robinson (Surrey, BC) and Amanda Renkema (Ladner, BC) all played in their final game at SFU Burnaby's West Gym in front of a 300-person crowd as they capped-off their careers in winning-fashion.

"I was very proud of how the girls stayed focused tonight," said head coach Gina Schmidt. "There are always lots of emotions with it being Senior's Night but the team stuck to the game plan and executed well on a big night."

The Clan took the three sets handily by scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-14, improving their 2014 record to 16-8 overall and 10-6 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

In set one the Saint's posed their greatest threat to SFU with late pressure, earning a five-point run and closing in on Simon Fraser 23-17, but the Clan were able to hold them off for the win and the go-ahead set.

In sets two and three Simon Fraser displayed confidence as the Clan led the entire 25 points of the first set to a 25-13 victory. They then responded under early pressure by SMU to battle back from a 5-1 deficit in the third set to win the game and ultimately the match.

Robinson and Devon May (Robert's Creek, BC) had ten kills each while Renkema and Hait added nine and five respectively.

Gould-Bradbury had 19 assists while Alison McKay (Port Moody, BC) had 18 digs on the night for the Simon Fraser side.

"The girls did a great job of keeping their emotions in check on the court tonight," finished Schmidt. "They were able to enjoy playing together one last time and home, and will have two final opportunities this season when we travel to Alaska this final weekend."

The Clan will fly to Alaska this week to close out the 2014 schedule with stops at Alaska Anchorage on Thursday and Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday, games that will mark the end of the four senior's collegiate careers.
