Clan battle hard; fall to No. 8 Cal State Stanislaus

Turlock, CA – The Simon Fraser University women's soccer team played a tough battle against nationally ranked Cal State Stanislaus in the first of two games at this weekend's Warrior Challenge.

The Clan fell 2-0 against their top-ten opponent, but showed increased pressure and execution in only their third game of the season.

"I am very proud of the team tonight," said Head Coach Annie Hamel. "They executed our game plan very well and frustrated the eighth ranked team in the nation."

The Clan defense held the Warriors to only five shots on goal in the contest, limiting the Californian squad's scoring chances throughout the game.

Cal State Stanislaus' first goal came in the eleventh minute as a tough cross from Tina Benson proved difficult for the defence to handle, and Jade Poon was able to scoop up the rebound for her first goal of the game.

Following the goal, the Clan's organization and work rate on the field was evident, halting the Warrior's 1-0 lead for the remainder of the period.

"The work rate of the girls last night was amazing," said Assistant Coach Anna Picarelli. "We traveled with low numbers and our girls proved not only their mental toughness but their physical toughness as well. Responding to a team that put on fresh legs every 15 minutes isn't easy and our girls battled until the very last second."

The second period the Clan continued to pressure the Warriors, forcing Cal State to turn to a long ball game in attempts to move the ball behind SFU's back line.

The Clan's method proved successful until an unfortunate call on a tackle in the 54th minute lead to a penalty kick for the Warriors, and Poon was able to score to make it 2-0 for Cal State.

SFU continued to press the remainder of the game, nearly earning a goal in the 89th minute off a Warrior goalkeeper error but the game ultimately ended at 2-0.

The game marks significant improvement from the 2013 match-up between SFU and Cal State Stanislaus where the Warriors beat the Clan 6-0.

With the loss, the Clan's record falls to 3-0 in the non-conference season.

SFU will look for their first win of 2014 on Saturday, September 13 as they take on Humboldt State in Turlock, CA to wrap up the Warrior Challenge.

Kick-off is at 11:30 a.m.
