Box Score
Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University men's soccer team dropped a double-overtime heart-breaker with Northwest Nazarene Saturday night, falling 3-2 in the second overtime period.

The teams were tied at 2-2 after 90-minutes forcing the extra time where NNU was able to put home the game winner with eight seconds remaining on the clock.

It is the Clan's first loss of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season, bringing their record to 0-2-1 in the GNAC.

"I am very proud of our players tonight," said head coach Alan Koch. "We have had to deal with a lot of adversity this week and the players' professionalism and work-rate has been first class."

It was the Clan's second consecutive game where a player was ejected in the second half, forcing the remaining players to play 10-aside.

SFU opened strong in the match, scoring an early goal less than ten-minutes into regulation.

Nico Schroettle knocked in an Alex Rowley cross for his second of the season, to put the Clan up 1-0 in the ninth minute.

From there the Clan continued to maintain control of the pace, formulating several scoring opportunities, and were rewarded with the 2-0 goal in the 33rd minute.

Alexander Kleefeldt would be the man to put in the shot, sending in a hard ball from distance that just skipped past NNU goalkeeper Alfredo Ontiveros.

The score would stand the remainder of the half, but in the second period things began to unravel for the home side.

In the 53rd minute, the Crusaders were able to combine to put a shot past Ivan Hutsulyak, bringing the score within one.

Then, moments later, Rowley was awarded his second yellow card of the match as well as the ensuing red card, as his ejection would force the Clan to play a man down the remainder of the game.

Two minutes later NNU's Michael Mollay put in the equalizer, as the pressure from the visitors continued to come.

The Clan made a great effort to shift the momentum, taking back some control in the mid-field and creating scoring opportunities as the minutes winded down, but ultimately the game would move to sudden-death overtime.

In the first 10-mintue overtime period the Clan had some near game-enders, but could not find the back of the net, while on the other end, Hutsulyak did his part to keep them in it with several big saves.

As the second extra period winded down and players on both sides became increasingly hungry for the winning goal, the teams began to trade fouls, and several yellow cards were awarded.

Unfortunately, with 18 seconds left to play the Crusaders were awarded a free-kick approximately 30 yards out, and after a scramble in the box including what looked to be a game-saving stop by Hutsulyak, Rene Duveal was able to knock in the game winner, making the final score 3-2.

With the loss the Clan move to 2-2-2 on the regular season, but will look to redeem themselves this Thursday, October 2, when they travel to Lacey, WA.

"Unfortunately things have been going against us at the moment," Koch finished. "But we have a great group of players and will work every day to turn things around.
