Burnaby, BC – In an action-packed match, the Simon Fraser men's basketball team fell 114 to 75 against the Great Northwest Athletic Conference leaders from Western Oregon.
The Clan struggled to find their rhythm in the match as the NCAA Division II scoring leaders were held to only 75 points.
Great Northwest Athletic Conference scoring leader Sango Niang had a team-high 17 points for the Clan, while dishing out four assists.
Simon Fraser fell behind early, but back-to-back lay-ins by Daniel Deflorimonte prompted the team as they quickly battled back to a 14-14 tie early in the first half.
The Wolves found their groove, however, as GNAC scoring defence leaders fell into form, with forwards Andy Avgi and Jordan Wiley combining for 49 points while running a full court press on Simon Fraser.
At the half, the Clan trailed 63-39, having shot only 25 percent from beyond the arc, normally a cornerstone to their offensive output.
Simon Fraser continued to struggle in the second half, shooting only 15.4 percent from three-point range, while the Wolves continued to press, scoring an impressive 50 percent from distance.
JJ Pankratz scored 10 points for SFU in the loss while Roderick Evans-Taylor and Mathijs van der Mars added nine each.
With the loss the Clan fall to 1-7 in GNAC play and 6-10 overall and will need to bounce back with a much needed win this Saturday against Saint Martin's.
The Saints, who sit 2-7 in conference play visit Simon Fraser for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off in a must-win game for SFU as the second half of the season approaches.
